이양하 수필

우울한 대한민국에서 도피하고파 이양하 수필집을 꺼냈다. 선생의 수필은 진흙탕 현실에서 한발 뒤로 물러나 안분지족(安分知足)을 꿈꾸게 하기 때문이다. 그리고 소년 시절도 떠오른다. 고등학교 때 국어 교과서에서 만난 '신록 예찬' '페이터의 산문'은 50년이 된 지금도 명료하다. 어려운 한자가 많이 나왔지만 고전적인 문체는 사람을 끌게 하는 매력이 있었다.

 

나이나 분위기에 따라 같은 글이라도 느낌이 다르다. 고등학생 때 만난 선생의 수필에는 봄의 설렘이 있었다. 그러나 이제 다시는 그런 느낌을 맛볼 수는 없을 것이다. 그때는 멀리서 들리는 소리였다면, 지금은 내 내면에서 울려오는 소리 같다.

 

그러나 선생의 수필도 지금의 내 우울한 마음을 온전히 위로해주지 못한다. 너무 막막하고 답답한 현실이다.

 

'페이터의 산문'의 몇 구절을 옮겨 본다. 마침 책에는 원문도 함께 적혀 있다.

 

 

참으로 지혜로 마음을 가다듬은 사람은, 저 인구人口에 회자膾炙하는 호머의 시구詩句 하나로도 이 세상의 비애와 공포에서 자유로울 수 있을 것이다.

 

사람은 나뭇잎과도 흡사한 것,

가을 바람이 땅에 낡은 잎을 뿌리면

봄은 다시 새로운 잎으로

숲을 덮는다.

 

잎, 잎, 조그만 잎! 너의 어린애도, 너의 아유자阿諛者도, 너의 원수도, 너를 저주하여 지옥에 떨어뜨리려 하는 자나, 이 세상에 있어 너를 헐고 비웃는 자나, 또는 사후에 큰 이름을 남긴 자나, 모두가 다 한가지로 바람에 휘날리는 나뭇잎. 그들은 참으로 호머가 말한 바와 같이 봄철을 타고난 것으로, 얼마 아니 하여서는 바람에 불려 흩어지고, 나무에는 다시 새로운 잎이 돋아나는 것이다.

 

To him, indeed, whose wit hath been whetted by true doctrine, that well-worn sentence of Homer sufficeth, to guard him against regret and fear.

 

Like the race of leaves

The race or man is

The wind in autumn strows

The earth with old leaves: then the spring

The woods with new endows.

 

Leaves! little leaves! - thy children, thy fiatterers, thine enemies! Leaves in the wind, those who would devote thee to darkness, who scorn or miscall thee here, even as they also whose great fame shall outlast them. For all these, and the like of them, are born indeed in the spring season -: and soon a wind hath scatterd them, and thereafter the wood peopleth itself again with another generation of leaves.

 

죽음을 염두에 두고 네 육신과 영혼을 생각해 보라. 네 육신이 차지한 것은 만상萬象 가운데 한 미진微塵, 네 영혼이 차지한 것은 온 세상에 충만한 마음의 한 조각.  이 몸을 둘러보고 그것이 어떤 것이며 노령老齡과 애욕愛慾과 병약病弱 끝에 어떻게 되는 것인가를 생각해 보라. 또는 그 본질, 원형原形에 상도想到하여 가상假象에서 분리된 정체正體를 살펴보고 만상의 본질이 그의 특수한 원형을 유지할 수 있는 제한된 시간을 생각해 보라. 아니 부패란 만상의 원리 원칙에도 작용하는 것으로, 만상은 곧 진애塵埃요 수액水液이요 악취惡臭요 골편骨片, 너의 대리석은 흙의 경결硬結, 너의 금은金銀은 흙의 잔사殘渣에 지나지 못하고, 너의 명주옷은 벌레의 잠자리, 너의 자포紫袍는 깨끗지 못한 물고기 피에 지나지 못한다. 아아! 이러한 물건에서 나와 다시 이러한 물건으로 돌아가는 네 생명의 호흡 또한 이와 다름이 없느니라.

 

Let death put thee upon the consideration both of thy body and thy soul : what an atom of all matter hath been distributed to thee : what a little particle of the universal mind. Turn the body about, and consider what thing it is, and that which old age, and lust, and the languor of disease  can make of it. Or come to its substantial and causal qualities, its very type : contemplate that in itself, apart from the accidents of matter, and then measure also the span of time for which the nature of things, at the longest, will maintain that special type. Nay! in the very principles and first constituents of things corruption heth its part - so much dust, humor, stench,and scraps of bone! Consider that thy marbles and but the earth's callosities, thy gold and silver its foeces ; this silken robe but a worm's bedding, and thy purple an unclean fish. Ah! and thy life's breath is not otherwise, as it passeth out of matters as these, into the like of them again.

 

세상은 한 큰 도시, 너는 이 도시의 시민으로 이때까지 살아왔다. 아, 온 날을 세지 말며, 그날의 짧음을 한탄하지 말라. 너를 여기서 내보내는 것은 부정한 판관이나 폭군이 아니요 너를 여기 데려온 자연自然이다. 그러니 가라. 배우가 그를 고용한 감독이 명령하는 대로 무대를 나가듯이. 아직 5막은 다 끝나지 않았다고 하려느냐? 그러나 인생에 있어서는 3막으로 극 전체가 끝나는 수가 있다. 그것은 작자作者가 상관할 일이요 네가 간섭할 일이 아니다. 기쁨을 가지고 물러가라. 너를 물러가게 하는 것도 혹은 선의善意에서 나오는 일인지도 모를 일이니까.

 

Thou hast been a citizen in this wide city. Count not for how long, nor repine ; since that which sends thee hence is no unrighteous judge, no tyrant, but Nature, who brought thee hither ; as when a player leaves the stage at the bidding of the conductor who hired him. Sayest thou, "I have not played five acts?" True! but in human life, three acts only makes sometimes an entire play. That is the composer's business, not thine. Withdraw thyself with a good will ; for that too hath, perchance, a good will which dismisseth thee from thy part.
